Sugar Heart and Life: A Guide to Living with Diabetes (SHL) is an online and DVD-based program comprised of an interactive telenovela, learning games and activities designed to assist patients and their families with decision-making and coping skills related to diabetes management. SHL was designed for both English- and Spanish-speaking patients who are novice computer users, many of whom have minimal reading ability. SHL incorporates key aspects of diabetes management such as diet, exercise and medication.

SHL was developed by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Programming and production management was provided by Smilex. SHL can be viewed at www.bcm.edu/shl . BCM received a Web Health Award for SHL in 2011.
